To see, not to explain
Daseinsanalysis holds to the phenomenon as it shows itself from itself, and refuses to posit hidden machinery behind it. In Gion Condrau’s words, its concern is to see (sehen), not to explain (erklären).

A psychotherapy grounded in Martin Heidegger’s ontology. It does not explain the human being in terms of forces behind the phenomena. It attends to how a life shows itself, and works to free the openness that belongs to it.
Dasein is an entity which does not just occur among other entities. Rather it is ontically distinguished by the fact that, in its very being, that being is an issue for it. Martin Heidegger, Being and Time, 1927

Dreams are not translated back into a wish. A dream is taken as one modality of the analysand’s being-in-the-world, a direct revelation of their world, speaking for itself. There is no manifest content concealing a latent one.
Human existence is an area of openness toward everything it encounters. Suffering appears as a constriction of that openness. The work is to free it, so that a person may exist freely and answerably in their own world.
The Zurich school concluded that Dasein loses its meaning under any attempt at translation, and kept the German. These are the terms the work is carried out in.
Gion Condrau and the Zurich group founded the federation in 1990 to hold the school together across borders: to keep the specificity of Daseinsanalysis legible, to help national associations come into being, and to carry teaching, research and publication.
It became an international non-profit association seated in Belgium on 4 April 2013, and is affiliated with the European Association of Psychotherapy.
Ten national associations across nine countries, six individual members from countries without an association yet, and a register of 171 practitioners.
Daseinsanalyse, the federation’s official organ, has appeared since 1984. Thirty articles from the 2016 and 2023 issues are catalogued here, in English, German, French and Portuguese, alongside the register of everything published between 1984 and 2008.
